For emergency response teams (ERT) in oil and gas, a higher level of fitness is essential. ERT team members are often required to deal with acute or life-threatening situations. Therefore, the OEUK ERT medical involves additional requirements, this has also now been adjusted by OEUK to be deliverable during the pandemic.

This type of medial involves The Chester Step Test, which is a more reliable way of gauging your fitness by measuring your heart’s ability to recover from exertion. The Chester Step Test is an aerobic test which requires you to step onto, and off a 30 cm / 12″ step, at a rate set by a metronome disc, aiming to reach around 80% max heart rate at a moderate level of exertion. It is a multi-staged test so every 2 minutes there is an increase in the rate of the step. This aerobic fitness test must be carried out annually – on top of the basic offshore medical carried out every two years.

You should allow approximately 30 minutes for this medical, however may take longer if in conjunction with your offshore medical.
